Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about photoluminescent pigments, ordering, customization and compatibility.
Strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment (SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+) is an inorganic compound that absorbs energy from visible light or UV radiation and releases it slowly as visible glow in the dark.
The added rare earth elements act as the luminescence center and energy trap that stores charge and prolongs afterglow duration.
Compared to the traditional zinc sulfide-based photoluminescent pigment (ZnS:Cu), strontium aluminate based photoluminescent pigment delivers 10x higher brightness and afterglow duration.
Yes, the 12-hour figure is measured according to DIN 67510, using a D65 light source at 1000 lx for 5 minutes of excitation, and tracking afterglow until luminance decays to 0.3 mcd/m², which is the threshold at which the human eye can still detect glow in darkness.
In practice, photoluminescent pigment is a low-intensity light source designed for dark environments. Whether it appears "bright enough" at any given moment is subjective, some users find the glow clearly sufficient after several hours, while others may feel it it not bright enough. Perception also varies with environment: in a room with residual ambient light, the glow will appear dimmer than in darkness.
For this reason, international standards such as ISO 17398 and DIN 67510 do not measure glow duration alone. The two most meaningful performance indicators are luminance at 10 minutes and luminance at 60 minutes after excitation, measured in mcd/m². These values give a consistent, objective basis for comparing pigment performance and selecting the right grade for your application.
The most reliable way is to compare published luminance data measured under the same test conditions, such as DIN 67510. If a supplier only quotes glow hours without mcd/m² figures, treat that as a red flag.
Look for brightness values (in mcd/m²) at 10 minutes and 60 minutes after excitation. Both figures matter, as some pigments look bright initially but decay quickly.
Our standard test conditions for photoluminescent pigment is: D65 light source, 1,000 lux, 10 minutes excitation.
If you don't have a luminance meter, you can do a practical comparison yourself:
Place samples of equal thickness under the same light source for 15 minutes, then move to a completely dark room. Observe brightness at 10 minutes and 60 minutes in the dark.
Invite several people to observe together. Human eyes adapt differently to darkness, so multiple observers give a more consistent result.
Human eyes are most sensitive to light in the 507-555 nm range in low-light conditions, and yellow-green strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment has a emission wavelength of around 520nm. Therefore human eyes are very sensitive to green glow color in dark environments.
Also, yellow-green glow color is made with strontium aluminate based photoluminescent pigment, which is the type of photoluminescent pigment that has the strongest afterglow intensity.
This makes green strontium aluminate pigment the global standard for safety signage, emergency evacuation markings, and all applications where maximum visibility in darkness is critical.
Glow in the dark powder is suitable for application including printing, coating, spray painting, casting, injection molding, fiber drawing, powder coating, ceramic, glass, and so much more.
We recommend you to add the pigment into transparent or semi-transparent medium so its luminosity will not be influenced.
Always verify compatibility with a small-scale trial before full production. To get the best model, please send us your product type and application process, then we can recommend you with the most suitable grain sizes and luminosity.
