Selection Guide
How to Choose the Right Photoluminescent Pigment Model
We make 30+ models with 5 luminosity grades and 8 particle sizes for different industries and processes.
The number in the model name indicates the luminosity grade. Higher numbers mean higher initial brightness and longer afterglow duration.
All MHG Series strontium aluminate pigments deliver afterglow duration of 12 hours or more, measured to decay to 0.3 mcd/m² under DIN 67510 excitation conditions.
Grade selection depends on your product requirements and target market. Not sure which grade fits your product? Ask our technical team →
Grade 8 — Ultra High Intial Glow, High Afterglow
MHG-8B / 8C / 8D / 8DE / 8FHighest brightness in the first 2–10 minutes after excitation. Best for safety-critical applications, signage, and premium products.
Grade 6 — Ultra High Afterglow, High Initial Glow
MHG-6B / 6C / 6DE / 6EH / 6F / 6GHigh afterglow and prolonged glow hours. Best for safety-critical applications, signage, watches and premium products.
Grade 4 — Balanced Performance, Most Popular Models
MHG-4B / 4C / 4D / 4DE / 4EH / 4F / 4GGood initial brightness and afterglow. Suitable for most industrial and commercial products.
Grade 2 — Balanced Performance & Cost Effective
MHG-2T / 2DE / 2FEconomy grade with high initial brightness and balanced afterglow. Suitable for most industrial and commercial products where cost control is a priority.
Grade 1 — Entry Level
MHG-1C / 1D / 1DYFor products with basic glow performance requirement. Suitable for novelty items, non-safety decorative use, etc.
Particle size selection is critical. A particle size that is too large may clog your screen or nozzle and cause uneven dispersion. A particle size that is too small will reduce brightness and afterglow duration.
As a general rule: larger particles produce higher initial brightness and longer glow duration. .

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment (SrAlzO4:Eu2+,Dy3+) is an inorganic compound that absorbs energy from visible light or UV radiation and releases it slowly as visible glow in the dark.
The added rare earth elements act as the luminescence center and energy trap that stores charge and prolongs afterglow duration.
Compared to the traditional zinc sulfide-based photoluminescent pigment (ZnS:Cu), strontium aluminate based photoluminescent pigment delivers 10x higher brightness and afterglow duration.
Yes, the 12-hour figure is measured according to DIN 67510, using a D65 light source at 1000 lx for 5 minutes of excitation, and tracking afterglow until luminance decays to 0.3 mcd/m², which is the threshold at which the human eye can still detect glow in darkness.
In practice, photoluminescent pigment is a low-intensity light source designed for dark environments. Whether it appears "bright enough" at any given moment is subjective, some users find the glow clearly sufficient after several hours, while others may feel it it not bright enough. Perception also varies with environment: in a room with residual ambient light, the glow will appear dimmer than in darkness.
For this reason, international standards such as ISO 17398 and DIN 67510 do not measure glow duration alone. The two most meaningful performance indicators are luminance at 10 minutes and luminance at 60 minutes after excitation, measured in mcd/m². These values give a consistent, objective basis for comparing pigment performance and selecting the right grade for your application.
Human eyes are most sensitive to light in the 507-555 nm range in low-light conditions, and yellow-green strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment has a emission wavelength of around 520nm. Therefore human eyes are very sensitive to green glow color in dark environments.
Also, yellow-green glow color is made with strontium aluminate based photoluminescent pigment, which is the type of photoluminescent pigment that has the strongest afterglow intensity.
This makes green strontium aluminate pigment the global standard for safety signage, emergency evacuation markings, and all applications where maximum visibility in darkness is critical.
For water-based paint, ink, or any application with moisture exposure, please ask us for the encapsulated/waterproof version, it has the same glow performance as non-waterproof version, but with full moisture resistance.
Non-waterproof version is suitable for solvent-based paints, inks, plastics, epoxy resins, and dry applications.
Strontium aluminate photoluminescent pigment is suitable for application including printing, coating, spray painting, casting, injection molding, fiber drawing, powder coating, ceramic, glass, and so much more.
We recommend you to add the pigment into transparent or semi-transparent medium so its luminosity will not be influenced.
Always verify compatibility with a small-scale trial before full production. To get the best model, please send us your product type and application process, then we can recommend you with the most suitable grain sizes and luminosity.
