PVC Photoluminescent Film: Printable & Flame Retardant

PVC photoluminescent film structure diagram — 5 layers including transparent protective layer, emitting layer and white base

Minhui's PVC photoluminescent film is a self-adhesive glow-in-the-dark vinyl, made by coating our strontium aluminate pigment and PVC paste resin.

It is flexible, printable, and flame retardant, complying with RoHS, IMO, DNV, ISO, CCS, and MED B+D standards.

Charge our photoluminescent film for 10–20 minutes under any light source and it can glow for more than 12 hours (measured to 0.3 mcd/m²). Used for exit signs, evacuation markings, directional signage, identification labels, and decorative applications.

Flame retardant — self-extinguishing when removed from flame; meets fire-safety requirements for public-space applications.

ISO 17398/PSPA — luminance ranges from Class A to Class E+, with high afterglow intensity and long afterglow duration.

Printable — silk-screen, inkjet (solvent / eco-solvent), and UV printing; no surface pre-treatment needed.

No warping, no edge lift — remains stable during cutting and weeding; strong adhesive backing for long-term installation.

Long service life — indoor 6–8 years; outdoor 4–6 years; operating temperature −20 °C to +65 °C; suitable for year-round use.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does glow in the dark film glow?

A: The short answer: glow in the dark film's glow duration stated in hours alone without a brightness data is not meaningful and cannot be verified or compared between products. It is a marketing term, not a technical one.

When a supplier claims their photoluminescent film "glows for 4 hours" or "8 hours," that figure is typically based on their subjective judgment, just someone in a dark room deciding when they can no longer see a glow. Human eyes vary significantly in dark-adaptation sensitivity, and what one person perceives as "still glowing" another may consider invisible. Without a calibrated luminance meter and the afterglow brightness statistic, these hour claims have no scientific basis and cannot be verified, reproduced, or compared between products.

The correct way to specify glow duration is: luminance (mcd/m²) at a defined time after a defined excitation. The most used international standard for testing photoluminescent film's luminosity is DIN 67510-1. This allows meaningful comparison between products and suppliers. All Minhui Luminous photoluminescent film data is tested to this standard: excitation at D65 1,000 lux for 5 minutes, with luminance values at 10 minutes and 60 minutes stated for every grade.

When evaluating any photoluminescent film supplier, ask for: luminance in mcd/m² at 10 min and 60 min, the excitation conditions used, and the test standard referenced. A professional supplier will have no hesitation providing it.

Q: What is photoluminescent film and how does it work?

A: Photoluminescent film, also known as glow in the dark film, is a self-adhesive vinyl material that absorbs and stores energy from any ambient light source (natural daylight or artificial indoor lighting) and releases the glow in the dark or during power-outage. The glow requires no electricity, no batteries, and no external power source of any kind.

The glow material used to make the photoluminescent film is strontium aluminate (SrAl₂O₄), a rare-earth inorganic compound. When photons from a light source strike the material, electrons in the crystal structure absorb energy and move to a higher energy state. In darkness, these electrons gradually return to their original state and release the stored energy as visible light. Unlike fluorescent materials, which only glow while a UV light source is active, photoluminescent film continues to emit light for a long time after the light source is removed.

Therefore, photoluminescent film is very valuable for safety applications: in a power outage or emergency, it continues to illuminate exit routes, evacuation markings, and safety signs without any infrastructure dependency.

Q: What is Class C or Class D, and which class do I need for photoluminescent film?

A: Class C or Class D is a sub-classification from the globally recognized performance grading system for photoluminescent materials. ISO 17398 has listed 4 sub-classification: A through D. The PSPA (Photoluminescent Safety Products Association) has listed 7 classes (A through G).  Each class specifies the minimum luminance (mcd/m²) the photoluminescent material must maintain at 2, 10, 30, and 60 minutes after the light source is removed.

Class C is the recommended minimum for safety signage and evacuation systems per ISO 16069, ISO 17398 and PSPA.

    Class 2 min (mcd/m²) 10 min (mcd/m²) 30 min (mcd/m²) 60 min (mcd/m²)
    A 108 25 7 3
    B 210 50 15 7
    C 690 140 45 20
    D 1,100 260 85 35
    E 1,800 400 120 55
    F 2,300 520 155 70
    G 3,000 650 190 80

Minhui's MHF PVC film covers Class A (MHF-G030P) through Class E (MHF-G500P), the class for each model is shown in the specification table. For applications requiring higher luminance, please use our photoluminescent rigid sheets.

Q: Can I print On photoluminescent film?

A: Yes. Minhui's MHF series PVC photoluminescent film is compatible with solvent inkjet, eco-solvent inkjet, UV digital printing, UV-curable screen printing, solvent-based screen printing, etc. No surface pre-treatment required for any of these workflows.

We also offer a printing and customization service. Send us your artwork and sign specifications and we can produce finished signs ready for installation.

Q: Is glow in the dark film safe?

A: Minhui's glow in the dark film is non-toxic, non-radioactive and safe to use. Our photoluminescent film complies with RoHS standards, and the glow in the dark powder we use to make the film complies with REACH, RoHS and ASTM standards.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity, and are samples available?

A: Standard MOQ is 1 rolls per model. For new customers, we provide free evaluation samples. Please send us your application details and target grade when requesting.
